Let me start by explaining this is not a sponsored post. I wish it was, because AeroGarden is the best! The worst part about it is that I only have one – seriously, I’m trying to find my model on sale again to hook up a second right next to it.
So what exactly is it? And why is it so awesome? I shall explain …
What Is an AeroGarden?
It’s a table-top garden that grows plant pods in water instead of soil. Even the blackest of thumbs can’t kill this thing. That would be me and mine is thriving. When you start it, you pick 6 pods to grow, fill the base with water and a cap-full of plant food (that comes with the pods), and plug it in. Mine connects to WiFi to send water and food refill reminders to my cell, but honestly, I don’t think that is a necessary feature. On the models without WiFi, there are lights on the base that notify you when it needs attention. The grow LED lights run automatically on a timer regardless of which model you have.
Here are 6 reasons I love my AeroGarden …
1. It helps me be a better neighbor
One person can only cook with so much thyme. I’m also running out of bud vases faster than the flowers in them are biting the dust. So, I’ve started sharing my bounty with neighbors and friends. It feels good to be able to do something nice for someone else – even if it’s not anything big.
2. Flowers brighten up any room
Fresh flowers are my downfall spending wise, but I realized I don’t need a full bouquet to get enjoyment from them. A small bud vase with one stem is plenty and with the AeroGarden, I constantly have one in every room – even the BATHROOM has a bud vase now.
3. Gives me something to take care of
This sounds funny as I type it – do I really need more responsibility in my life? I have two cats already. But I have found that I love taking care of the little plants and watching them flourish. Each night before bed, I check how they’re doing, raise or lower the lights accordingly, and prune where needed. It’s calming and nice to watch them change each day!
4. Having house plants is good for your health
I wrote about this years ago in a post about mental health, but for the newbie readers, studies show that being around plants can reduce stress. They purify the air around you to help you breathe easier. They increase concentration and productivity and boost your mood.
5. Encourages me to cook more
I don’t cook often, but when I do, I hate having to buy things like fresh herbs that I know will go to waste. Not only is my harvest making me cook more to get to use the herbs, but it’s also making me think outside the box in what I’m making.
6. Provides me with healthy food
Sort of along the lines of the last one, but wanted to also mention that one of the pods I have in is for salad greens, so I’m getting weekly salads out of the thing too. I’m about to get my first tomatoes as well, which I’m pumped for!
Which AeroGarden should you get?
This is a little tricky. The model I got happened to be on a mega sale when I purchased it and is ONLY available from The Home Depot. It’s WiFi capable and a magenta-y-purple color. I love it, but had I known I would love it so much, I would have purchased the basic white version so I could add more and have them match. In this case, I don’t think the WiFi is necessary. If I were to recommend one, I’d steer you in the direction of this basic white model or this stepped-up copper one. Note – most of the gardens are cheaper on Amazon than they are on the AeroGarden website and they seem to have more color options.
In terms of getting the seed pods that go with it, you can purchase from Amazon, but their kits are all pre-made. Examples: Salad Greens Kit with 6 pods of different kinds of lettuce, Gourmet Herbs Kit with popular herb varieties, and Cascading Petunias Kit – not even going to explain that one. On Amazon, prices fluctuate, but are around $15 for a 6-pack.
On AeroGarden’s website, you’ll pay for shipping, but you can also custom build your seed kit to include exactly what you want. Plus, they frequently have sales!
Okay, so there you have it! So much info on my new favorite hobby. What other questions do you have?
