Last week, I shared this post about how to do an at home dip powder manicure. I’ve received lots of questions from you all, and some that people had asked before the post that I feel are worth mentioning again. Here’s my home dip powder manicure FAQ …
How long does it last?
About 8-12 days. If you get a dip manicure done in a salon, it will last longer, but does more damage to your nails when the tech files your nail down with a drill.
Speaking of … at the salon they use a nail drill to file down my nail … how do I do that at home?
Well, I don’t. I use a buffer instead – it doesn’t last quite as long, but as mentioned, your nail stays much healthier.
Will it damage my nails?
No! Once removing dip powder, my nails look totally normal. Note: resist peeling the color off when it starts to loosen, because that tears up your nails for sure!
How do you remove it?
I soak a small cotton ball in 100% acetone and use these clips to hold them in place. It takes 20-30 minutes and I usually watch TV when the clips are on since I can’t do anything with my nails.
It looks so complicated? Is it hard?
Not at all – there are a lot of steps, but the process itself is very simple and I think easier than painting your nails with polish.
How long does it take?
When I first started, it would take me around 45 minutes. Now that time is down to 30-35 minutes. But, bonus! No dry time needed.
How do you keep your cuticles in shape?
Before I do my nails, I use solar oil on my cuticles and gently push them back. I apply the solar oil every other day or so when they’re done.
Why is the top coat making my nail dull or rough?
Because you have too much activator still on your nail. This is a mani death trap and you’ll have to start over, unfortunately. Next time, be sure to wait for a minute or so after using the second coat of activator, then rub each nail with a paper towel. The first top coat should be a thin, quick layer, wiping the brush between nails. The second top coat you can go slower and be more precise. That should do the trick.
How much does it cost?
You can find inexpensive starter kits for around $35 – $40. If you expect this is something you’ll keep up with for a long time, I suggest investing a bit more in the higher-quality products. With the top of the line, you’re looking at around $100 and this will last for many months to a year or more. You can find the full supplies list here.
Can I mix and match brands of the liquids and powders?
Just like regular nail polish you can absolutely mix and match brands. In fact, I’ve found that there are some products in various brands that I like better than others. Find what works for you!!
What does it feel like?
The polish dries hard and feels almost like an acrylic. Don’t worry, though, it doesn’t damage your nails the way acrylics do!
