I asked this very same question myself a few months ago after seeing these pop up in just about every Instagram flatlay. I decided to investigate the jade roller and its uses, and am so glad I did!
So What Is A Jade Roller?
A jade roller is a skincare tool that’s been around for centuries! Exactly like it sounds, it’s a piece of solid jade that you roll over your face for a nice massage. They’re said to improve circulation, reduce puffiness, and look pretty sitting on your bathroom counter. These benefits come from lymphatic drainage, which frankly, sounds pretty gross. There’s also a theory that using a jade roller after putting creams and serums on will help your products soak into your skin better.
Does It Actually Work?
To be completely honest, I have a mixed review on the jade roller. After using mine every night for weeks, I saw no overall difference in my skin. I also tried using it a few times in the morning to see if it made me less puffy or red, but no dice.
That said, it was recommended to me to store my roller in the fridge and it’s been a nice summer treat to cool off with every night before bed. Just in case it does help product absorb, I use it after I wash my face and apply my creams. I roll the larger end upward across my cheeks, upward on my forehead, and sideways along my chin and jaw bone. Then, I use the smaller side on my nose and under my eyes.
So even though I don’t see all the claimed benefits personally, I really do like the way it feels!
A Tip On Deciding Which Jade Roller To Buy
I hate to give this advice, but I feel like I should … I went with one of the cheap-o versions on Amazon for my first one and it broke apart after two uses. Get what you pay for, I guess. It was a bummer, though, and I pretty much gave up hope until I was in a fancy skin care shop in Denver and came across one that was a bit pricier. Still nothing to break the bank at under $40. Since not everyone has all-natural skin care shops around the block, this one from Amazon seems to be a good happy medium on price with lots of positive reviews.
What do you think? Is a jade roller something you’ve tried or will give a try? Next up, I’m dying to see how the gua sha tool – which is often sold in a set with a jade roller – works!
