Remember how I said last week I was going to cross off doing a mini kitchen makeover (and a mini bathroom makeover) from my bucket list? Well, that was before I filed my taxes. And got a meager, but unexpected, REFUND! I am saving most of it to put toward the surgery, but figured I’d give myself the budget to fix some of my kitchen quirks.
What kind of quirks are we talking about? To preface, I have the world’s tiniest kitchen. When I moved in, there was zero counter space on one side and only about 3 feet on the other. I have a nice size fridge, but very little cabinet space.
The Initial Fixes
Since moving in, I’ve made some adjustments – most of which were to get things off the countertops. I installed a hanging paper towel rack and fruit basket above the sink. I also installed a piece of granite on the side of the stove to make more countertop space.
Of course, the fuse box is conveniently located on the back wall creating the most terrible eyesore. I purchased a large canvas to hang over it, and meant to do something more to it, but lost interest.
The Mini Kitchen Makeover Plan
Given that I’m a renter, I can’t make any structural changes even if I did have the budget. Instead, I’m going to focus on fixing the things that drive me crazy and try to stay under $150. No, I wasn’t kidding when I said “mini.”
The number-one priority is freeing up some cabinet space to get this monstrosity of over-fridge junk put away. Almost the entire first cabinet shelf above the stove is spices, so I’m going to install a rack on the wall.
Speaking of clutter, I’m also vowing to do something about the above microwave space that has become a landing zone for things that don’t have a home. I have a couple of sentimental gifts – one of which is a very delicate tea cup and saucer that is a piece of my childhood best friend’s grandmother’s China set. That was a mouthful, but you get the picture, it’s important to me and I would like to display these things properly!
I’m thinking I’ll get a big serving bowl for above the microwave to at least disguise some of the random stuff. Then, I’m planning on a couple of floating shelves on the other side of the sink to display the nice gifts.
Finally, that stupid canvas that covers the fuse box. I think I’m going to use it as an opportunity to clean off the fridge and hang some of the cards and photos people send that I don’t want to throw away. I keep my training calendar on my fridge, so I’ll hang this on the canvas as well. I’m hoping this can be a DIY project using things I already have at home.
So, what do you think of the plan? Any other space saving ideas?
