September 2019 Update
Y’all. The world’s best mama (that would be mine) sprung for the Ballard bedding I talked about below so I could make my winter bedroom dreams a reality! And let me tell you – it really came together nicely! This will keep me warm and cozy through about March, when I’ll switch back to my florals.
Original Post
When I was growing up, my mom and I used to change my bedding a couple times a year for a refreshed seasonal look. Come chilly temps, it always felt like a sort of winter bedroom makeover with cozy flannel sheets and cool colors.
While we were shopping for new bedding for her Colorado condo this summer, I fell in love with this black and white buffalo plaid duvet from Ballard Designs. It got me thinking about the good old days of changing my bedding and how nice it felt to have something different in the winter.
Don’t get me wrong, I love my current florals from Pottery Barn, but they don’t exactly scream winter in Chicago. Even with the Christmas lights …
Ever since I found this buffalo plaid beauty, though, I’ve been dreaming of how I could refresh my bedroom for the season. Now, I won’t actually do this – mostly because it’s just not in my budget this year, but it’s still fun to dream!
Winter Bedroom Makeover Vision Board
Just because I find this sort of thing fun, I decided to create a vision board with how I might redecorate in the future. Because of things like painted furniture and artwork, I would do my best to work with existing color schemes. Some of the pieces in here I actually own. Others are things I love that I would add or similar to what I have that’s no longer available.
Winter Bedroom Makeover: The Bed and Bedding
I think my main issue has been that all of the budget buffalo plaid duvets I find, just don’t quite do the Ballard version justice. The one pictured in the vision board is close and is under $40!! Here are a couple others – one from Pottery Barn, the other from CB2. At the end of the day, if I were actually doing this, I’d splurge for the Ballard.
The good news is, I think the bed frame I have would look great with this design. I mean it would have to – I’m obviously not switching that out. Mine is no longer available but here’s one that’s really similar and under $150!
Winter Bedroom Makeover: The Accents and Furniture
Since I painted this console table a coral color to add a nice pop, I would want to match accents to that. It’s not switching out. The color is Benjamin Moore Hot Spice and it was picked to match my existing bedding. I also have five small art prints above the TV that have a similar coral / orange shade in them.
I think I would switch out the art prints above the TV with something custom – maybe a botanical set to bring in some green? And I would add some textured throw pillows in a similar coral shade and white.
My dresser and nightstand are mirrored glass, so I have a feminine lamp in warm wood to tone down the look – this is one that’s similar. My apartment also has its original wood shutters, so those add a ton of warmth. Might look to add an oversized candle – I like this one because the color is great and the scent will complete the cozy winter vibe.
Do you change your home décor by the season? Bedding too? Maybe I’ll make this dream a reality next year!
