When Claire first asked me to guest post about things I love about on her blog while she’s out with her surgery, I thought sure I can find a few things to write about.
Speaking of the surgery, I’m sure everyone is interested in how Claire is doing – in a word, amazing. She breezed through the surgery. Her wonderful Dr. Kim said she did great and “I did great! They look beautiful.” He said he removed 6 pounds of tissue which is going for breast cancer research. So 6 pounds is like carrying an infant on your chest for 15 years. No wonder her back ached, mine aches just thinking about it. For you Chicago people, can’t say enough about how terrific Dr. Kim was, and the whole experience at Prentice was top notch. Claire is uncomfortable, but not debilitated. We walk for 10 to 20 minutes every couple hours, and we are really looking for the recovery to be less intense than we thought.
Back to things I love … the problem, of course is limiting it to an amount anyone in their right mind would want to read. Maybe she’ll let me host another blog one day. I think she usually has about 5 things. This is excruciating to limit it to five! Maybe I’ll sneak in one more just because I can. 😉
In The Moment: Things I Love Guest Post on June 21, 2018
1. Glossier | 2. Andy Borowitz | 3. Pura Vida | 4. Radio Paradise | 5. Paris | 6. Manhattan Beach
Glossier
Just about everything they make is quality, but what I love at the moment is their new Lash Slick mascara. It is perfection in a tube. It never – as in never – clumps. Never smudges either.
The Boy Brow is amazing too. I have a scar running through one eyebrow, so it’s very difficult to cover. Boy Brow does it so nicely and it’s easy to apply and doesn’t wear off. And the company? Amazing. I ordered their Lash Slick and about a week later they refunded the entire amount because they had mislabeled it as vegan when it wasn’t. I probably would never have noticed, but it’s nice to find a company with morals.
Andy Borowitz
His satire is amazing. No matter what your political persuasion is, one must admit these are crazy times. It sometimes is a huge relief to find something funny in my inbox other than depressing news. Here’s a little clip of Andy Borowitz being Andy Borowitz.
Pura Vida Bracelets (And Other Jewelry)
I am just loving these for summer. These are rather beachy, don’t you think? Pura Vida means pure life in Spanish, and in the Costa Rican culture it means taking the time to celebrate life. The company started when two young Californians traveled to Costa Rica and found these being made. They took 400 back to the States and they sold like hot cakes. Now they have over 200 people who rely on them for steady income in a safe working environment. They have donated almost 1.5 million to various charities.
Radio Paradise
My niece and her husband turned me on to this great station. It’s a blend of many different styles and genres. You are as likely to hear rock as jazz as electronica as world music as classical. What you won’t get is computer generated playlists or commercials. You can stream on your computer, Roku, even Alexa likes RP. You can just ask her to play Radio Paradise, but you can also enable the RP skill and then you can skip songs, ask what’s playing, etc.
Paris
This isn’t just something I love right now, I am a life-long Francophile. Love everything French, everything Parisian. Maybe she’ll let me do a travel blog about the City of Light. I’m sure I could count how many times I’ve been there, but it might not be quite accurate. I’ve been there so many times I don’t even go to the Louvre any longer.
Manhattan Beach by Jennifer Egan
It is probably the best book I’ve read so far this year. It takes place during WWII mostly in New York at the Naval Yard where Anna – the main character – becomes the first woman diver. Throughout the book it encompasses – gangsters, Merchant Mariners, mores of the times, plights of women, and on and on.
Also on my nightstand, so to speak, is Gulf which won this year’s Pulitzer Prize for historical non-fiction and was written by a University of Florida professor. (Go Gators!)
I’m so glad I got to share the things I love with you this week. What’s on your list I must check out?
